Enjoyed your column! I also cannot speak with an American accent! I cannot lose my British accent! I have lived here 41 years! My husband is American. We no longer hear each other’s accents. Many Americans think I am either from the South or Australia!

We will continue to speak in our mother tongue with our accent!

Back when I lived in Silicon Valley in the 1990s and people did the "where are you from?" thing I would sometimes (depending typically on how much booze had been consumed) claim that I had a native San Francisco accent. When people questioned this, I would ask them if they had ever met another native San Franciscoan and they would always admit that everyone they know who lived in SF was a migrant from somewhere else. Depending on their apparent gullibility I would sometimes explain that Sir Francis Drake had established a colony back in the 1500s which (obviously) spoke British English and so on.

Still better than being misidentified as an Australian...
